Doberman Service Dog

Doberman Service Dogs are becoming more popular. The breeds loyalty, desire to please, and instinctual ability to read their partners body language makes the exceptionally suited to the task of service work. They are especially good at being psychiatric service dogs, in part due to that strong bond with their owner. They can also make excellent service dogs for other disabilities such as allergy detection, hearing alert, mitigating minor mobility issues, and diabetic alert. We do not recommend a Doberman for disabilities that are extremely mobility affecting, that frequently lead to black outs or loss of alertness like seizures or narcolepsy, or a disability that would cause a handler to act irrationally. We also do not recommend them as autism service dogs, at least not for public access situations. The reason we do not recommend these particular disabilities for this breed is due to the natural protectiveness that can be triggered. And while training and mitigate this, we feel that for these particular issues it would be best to select a breed that is not likely to try to guard an incapacitated or out of control handler. Dobermans are a high energy breed needing a fair amount of exercise every day to remain healthy in both mind and body making them ill suited for a handler with serve issues with mobility.

Not every Doberman is geared to be a service dog. It is important that if you are looking to find a Doberman with the end goal of them being your or someone you love’s service dog that you find a breeder knowledgeable what to look for to help you chose the best service dog candidate Doberman for your specific needs.
